چکیده

Unbleached kraft pulp fibers were modified with laccase and ferulic acid (FRC) to improve their physical strength properties in paper products. The optimal conditions of laccase-FRC modification were examined in terms of the physical properties of pulps. The effects of laccase-FRC modification on the carboxyl group content and surface lignin content of pulps were investigated. The surface morphologies of laccase-FRCmodified pulp fibers were observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The carboxyl group and surface lignin contents for laccase-FRC-modified pulps increased compared to the control pulp. AFM phase images showed that the laccase-FRC-modified fiber surfaces were covered with large granular substances from the products of FRC grafting and lignin polymerization/condensation reactions. The observed strength improvements of laccase-FRC-modified pulp could be attributed to the grafting of FRC onto the fibers, the higher carboxyl group content of the modified fibers, and the formation of covalent bonding between the fibers via radical coupling.

Removal of lipophilic extractives from paper pulp by laccase and lignin-derived phenols as natural mediators.

In this paper, we show for the first time that lignin-derived phenols can act as laccase mediators for the removal of lipophilic compounds from paper pulp. These natural mediators represent an alternative to synthetic mediators, such as 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT), that cause some economic and environmental concerns. Unbleached kraft pulp from eucalypt wood, which contained free and conjugated...

Variation of chemical and morphological properties of different parts of banana plant (Musa paradisica) and their effects on pulping

Chemical and morphological characterization of different parts of banana plant(Musa paradisica) (peduncle, leaf stalk and pseudo stem) were carried out in orderto assess their potentiality for chemical pulp. Each portion was tested forextractives, sodium hydroxide solubility, ash, lignin, cellulose and pentosancontents as well as their fiber length and width. These segmented parts werecharacter...

Carbohydrate structures in residual lignin-carbohydrate complexes of spruce and pine pulp

Residual lignin carbohydrate complexes (RLCC) were isolated enzymatically from spruce and pine pulp. The RLCCs contained 4.9–9.4% carbohydrates, with an enrichment of galactose and arabinose compared to the original pulp samples. The main carbohydrate units present in all studied RLCCs were 4-substituted xylose, 4-, 3and 3,6-substituted galactose, 4-substituted glucose and 4 and 4,6-substituted...

Dissolving Pulp (alpha-cellulose) from Corn Stalk by Kraft Process

Corn stalk can be used as an alternative non-wood raw material to produce cellulosic dissolving grade pulp. In this work, the potential of corn stalk in the production of dissolving pulp (alpha-cellulose) was investigated. It was collect ed from a corn stalk farm of Kermanshah, Iran. The sequences of experimental work were: water and acid prehydrolysis at 160˚C for 30min, followed by Kraft pulp...

Influence of Pulp Fiber Substrate on Conductivity of Polyaniline-coated Conductive Paper Prepared by In-situ Polymerization

The influences of pulp type, content of acidic groups (i.e., sulfonic and carboxylic groups) in CTMP, kappa number (i.e., residual lignin content) of unbleached kraft pulp, and beating degree of bleached kraft pulp on the conductivity of polyaniline (PAn)-coated conductive paper were investigated. The amounts of PAn coated on chemical pulps were higher than those coated on high yield pulps, and...
